United States [Senate or House of Representatives]
Washington, DC 20510 [more specific addresses, including zip codes can be found online]

Dear Senator [or Representative] [last name]:

As a constituent concerned with human and environmental health, I am very disturbed about nationally publicized research, cited in the Washington Post as the most "rigorous" of its kind, showing a strong link between "optimal" water fluoridation and an unusually lethal form of bone cancer in young males.

I am equally disturbed by the apparent cover-up of this research and the way in which the integrity of medical science today is routinely compromised by researchers’ conflicts of interest (see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2005/07/12/AR2005071201277.html).

This study adds to a substantial body of peer-reviewed science cited by EPA scientists involved with drinking water safety. According to Dr. William Hirzy of EPA union NTEU 280, additional adverse health effects from fluoride ingestion include, "genetic damage, neurological impairment and bone pathology [e.g., hip fracture]." http://www.salon.com/news/1999/02/17news.html

I understand that a majority of EPA unions – eleven in all – from across the country are now urging members of Congress to enact an immediate national moratorium on water fluoridation and to hold a full Congressional hearing into the practice. A copy of their letter can be accessed at: http://www.nteu280.org/Issues/Fluoride/fluroride%20.unions.congress.htm

By adding fluoride to the water supply, and then using that supply to process foods and beverages distributed throughout the U.S., fluoride exposure in America has become unavoidable. That levels of fluoride exposure are excessive is well documented in dental journal articles reporting on the rising rates of dental fluorosis in U.S. children.

Water is one of our most precious, taken-for-granted, resources. Any practice affecting a water supply is critical to the life and health of all who are dependent on that supply. I urge your support of the EPA unions’ call for an immediate moratorium and full Congressional hearing on water fluoridation.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
